[Reuters Tue Nov 7, 2006 1:28 AM GMT]MANAGUA, Nicaragua (Reuters) – Leftist Daniel Ortega led Nicaragua’s presidential election with 38.7 percent support after ballots from 61 percent of polling stations were counted on Monday, giving the former guerrilla an almost certain first-round victory.
Washington’s old Cold War enemy had a lead of almost 8 percentage points over conservative rival Eduardo Montealegre, the latest result from Sunday’s election showed. Ortega’s lead was slightly wider than earlier in the day.
Ortega needs 40 percent of the vote, or 35 percent and a 5-point lead over Montealegre, to take victory and avoid a runoff next month.
