オーストラリアのABCラジオのニュースで、日本共産党が取り上げられました。インタビューでは、日本共産党の志位和夫委員長だけでなく、最近日本共産党に入党した29歳の青年サトミ・ケンタロウさんも登場しています。
Japan communists hope to boost numbers in next month's elections

Tens of millions of Japanese will go to the polls in six weeks time, in an election expected to end half-a-century of almost unbroken rule by the Liberal Democratic Party.
But one party hoping for big gains at this polls is the Communist Party. With Japan struggling to haul itself out of a deep recession, the Communists say a thousand new members are joining up every month, while the party's newspaper is now reaching more than one-and-a-half million readers a day.

MARK WILLACY: In his apartment north of Tokyo, Kentaro Satomi is kicking back on his couch watching daytime soap operas.
He hasn't quite found a job yet but thanks to the Communist Party he's found a place to live and a reason to live.

"I was thinking only about committing suicide, I was without a job and very depressed" says Kentaro Satomi.
"But then I was helped by the Communist Party, they found me this apartment and gave me a hand" says the 29-year-old.
And in return for a hand, Kentaro Satomi joined the party.
And he's not alone in signing up to the communist revolution here in Japan.

The Communist Party says ever since the recession in Japan began to bite 1,000 people a month have been joining up and tonight more than 10,000 supporters have shown up at this rally.
In total, membership has now soared to more than 400,000.

"These days people are not just losing their jobs" says Communist Party official Toshio Ueki, "but they're also losing their homes."
"Many people have been cast adrift, so they're turning to us for help" he says. "Capitalism has no rules, so people have no protections" he says.
MARK WILLACY: As support for the Communist Party swells, membership of the government and opposition parties is declining.
Many of those turning to the Communists are young Japanese, members of the so-called lost generation who can only dream of the good old days when a job for life was guaranteed.
And helping to make communism more hip and happening is a Manga comic book version of Karl Marx's 'Das Kapital'.

"Karl Marx is booming in Japan" says Communist Party leader Kazuo Shii. "And the reason is that people are growing increasingly suspicious of capitalism, so they're turning to us," he says.
But the red revolution is unlikely to sweep through Japan just yet. The Communists might be the fourth biggest party in the Parliament but they hold only 16 out of 722 seats.
And as for a resurgent Karl Marx; well not all new recruits seemed to be familiar with his work.

"Uh? Karl Marx? I don't know him", says new Communist Party recruit Kentaro Satomi.

MARK WILLACY: Maybe the 29-year-old needs to turn off the daytime soaps and get himself one of Karl's comics.

日本共産党は来月の選挙で大きく伸びることを願っている

数千万の日本人が、6週間のうちに、半世紀ほとんど敗れることのなかった自民党の支配を終わらせることを期待して、投票へ行くだろう。
しかし、この選挙で大きく伸びることを期待された政党がある。それは共産党だ。日本は深刻な景気後退からぬけだそうともがいているとき、共産党は、1000人の新メンバーが毎月入党しているし、同党の機関紙の読者も150万人以上になっているという。マーク・ウィラシー：東京の北のアパートで、サトミ・ケンタロウは、昼ドラを見ながら料理をしている。
彼は目下仕事が見つからないが、共産党のおかげで住むところと生き甲斐を見つけた。
「私は、自殺することばかり考えていました。仕事もなく、困窮していました」とサトミ・ケンタロウはいう。
「しかし、そのとき私は共産党に助けられました。彼らは、私にこのアパートを見つけてくれ、私に手を貸してくれました」と29歳の青年はいう。
お返しに、サトミ・ケンタロウは同党に加わった。
彼は、ここ日本で共産主義革命を起こすことに加わっただけではない。共産党によれば、日本の景気不振が始まって以来、毎月1000人が加入し、このラリーで10000万人以上になる。
トータルで、党員は40万人以上になっている。「最近、人々は仕事を失っただけでなく、住むところも失っている」と共産党の職員ウエキ・トシオはいう。
「多くの人が解雇され、われわれに助けを求めてきている」と彼はいう。「資本主義はルールをもっていない。だから、人々はなんの保護ももっていない」と彼はいう。マーク・ウィラシー：共産党への支持は広がっているが、与党や野党の諸政党の党員数は減っている。
共産党にむかっている人たちの多くは若者だ。生涯の仕事が保証された古き良き日を夢見ることができるだけの、いわゆるロスト・ジェネレーションのメンバーだ。
共産党をさらにかっこよくするのを助けているのは、カール・マルクス『資本論』の漫画バージョンだ。「カール・マルクスは、日本でブームです」と共産党のリーダー、志位和夫はいう。「その理由は、人々がだんだん資本主義に疑念をいだきつつあるからです。それで人々は私たちに向いてきたんです」と彼はいう。
しかし、赤い革命は、すぐには日本を吹き抜けそうにない。共産党は議会内第4党であるとはいえ、（衆参）722議席のうち16議席を占めるだけだ。
カール・マルクスは復活したが、共産党の新人はみんなマルクスの著作に親しんでいるわけではない。「うん？ カール・マルクス？ 私は彼について知らない」と、新共産党員のサトミ・ケンタロウはいう。
マーク・ウィラシー：たぶん29歳の青年は昼ドラを消して、マルクスの漫画を自分に与える必要があるだろう。
